Humans are risk averse so if you show them that there’s no real risk outside of a trial year, they’re more likely to accept. It works in reverse because although I missed my targets the Hailee Steinfeld Vintage Shirt and I will buy this 2nd year, they didn’t take away my raise. They honestly forget and move on. Your business relationship is that you provide a service for them in the form of your job duties, and they provide you compensation for that service in the form of money. What they are doing is the equivalent of asking their carpenter to start doing their electrical work as well, for the same payment, with the statement that sometime in the future they might decide to pay them for it going forward (not even paying for the work they already did).

Hailee Steinfeld Vintage Shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater and long sleeve t-shirt

Your company would NEVER expect to provide their service/product for the Hailee Steinfeld Vintage Shirt and I will buy this price of a lesser service without a clear goal on how to make up that money (baking the loss into other prices, subscription prices, cancellation fees, etc.). And although they possibly might try, they also wouldn’t expect to be able to do so to an outside vendor. The fact they expect you to do so is them telling you directly they don’t respect you as a professional. Believe it or not you are actually kind of in a position of leverage. Your team is going without leadership, which is a bigger hole to fill than just a rank and file person, not only in terms of skills but also the cost of leaving it empty is higher. Assuming that you’re the go-to target to promote, then if you refuse they have to either: promote someone unqualified with the same bad faith deal, hire someone outside which is a costly risk and will require them to pay that person the amount they’re trying not to pay you, or they have to have someone higher up take over the role, which is costly.
