So yea, I’m doing what I can. Emdr therapy. Mindfulness. Mediation. Lots of reading. I go to a local sangha and meditate with a group of people (we all need community and connection). I am a youth soccer referee (it’s hard doing this while depressed at times. A thought can overwhelm and trigger me while I’m in front of 100’s of people. But when I’m in a flow it’s meditative + exercise). Mindfulness is one of the Grinch Hat Santa Michigan Wolverines Gift Christmas 2023 Shirt and I will buy this best tools though. It gives you the wherewithal to simply observe your state, observe your feelings, observe your thoughts, then accept them and not judge them. Just be them. These things, if not grabbed onto, if not fed, will eventually pass like a cloud. Depression sucks. But it can metabolize and pass. You gotta learn to not grasp, push, or pull. Just be. Just rest in who you are and feel now. Don’t tell yourself I’m depressed and don’t want to be. That always feeds into a narrative that you are the depression and that you are lacking. Start to tell yourself “I feel depression”. Start to try and separate yourself from it. It is not your default state. It is not you.

I got out. I’m very happy now. I’m being paid to study my favorite subject in a PhD program, I married my best friend, I’m happy with my prayer life. When you say you’re doing “all the Grinch Hat Santa Michigan Wolverines Gift Christmas 2023 Shirt and I will buy this things you’re supposed to do,” do you mind saying what you’ve been doing? My experience is that most therapists (and often religious teachers) leave out, or downplay the most foundational thing people can do for well-being: contributing to the well-being of others, and refraining (as much as we can) from doing anything that would harm others. A lot of positive psychological research in the last twenty years has shown how important this is for well-being, but not a lot of therapists or spiritual teachers make it their focus.
