I’m a city guy. The bigger and busier and dirtier and steamier the Gettin Lucky In Kentucky Shirt and I love this better. Give me sewer stink. Why, then, does Jakarta not click. I read innumerable other posts deriding it’s walkability, traffic, and lack of “tourist attractions”, but I was on the road and never gave the big smoke a poke. Well, I’m here now, and I get it, but, I don’t get it. What do other SEA cities have that is so severely lacking in Jakarta? It goes beyond temples and footpaths. There’s some secret sauce that’s left one of the largest and most densely populated cities feeling empty and dull. I considered Islamic influence on society, but then Malaysia, which is arguably much more conservative, has much more vibrant and interesting cities.It’s not walkable at all compared to Bangkok. There is no center, or heart of the city. It’s the Indonesian version of sprawl. It’s LA without the nice beaches or mountains nearby. It’s densely populated, but it’s so poorly laid out and designed that you don’t feel that energy you normally get from being around so many people.

When I was a kid, I always got sick when I visit Jakarta because the air and everything was just so dirty. I told myself I would never live in Jakarta. And then life happened and I ended up here. I always told myself it was temporary but something core to my being had always kept me here and it’s been quite the ride of the lifetime. I still hate that Jakarta smells like exhaust pipes, sewers and garbage. It’s not a very walkable city, the traffic jams are impossible, and the public transport is overloaded and fragmented.

I’m not Muslim, and with all due respect I appreciate prayer calls as an integral part of Islamic culture, but I have never gotten used to mosques that broadcast sermons all night long on the Gettin Lucky In Kentucky Shirt and I love this loudspeaker. Touristic places of interests are not very apparent in the city but I do have a few favourite hidden gems especially up north by the coast, some historic buildings, and the islands Kepulauan Seribu. I’m staying mainly for job opportunities and the people though. As an Indonesian Third Culture Kid straddling a local identity and an international upbringing, I’ve lived in close to half a dozen countries and found the city to fit my mindset like a glove to be Jakarta. I’ve found vibrant communitiea here that I’m proud to be part of, made lifelong friends, and have a solid professional network that keeps on giving opportunities. I’m sort of seeing an Australian man who was here in December but is currently back in his hometown. He’s said that he’s been considering moving to Jakarta since his first visit here a few years ago. And I’d ask why and remind him of all the things I hate about Jakarta.
As someone who grew up familiar with Jakarta albeit from a distance, I lack the Gettin Lucky In Kentucky Shirt and I love this rose tinted lenses through which he sees the Big Durian. I believe that it is because in both cities, there is a notable lack of large advertising and colour, so it FEELS boring. But IMO the value in Jakarta lays in the diversity of it’s neighbourhoods/cities that make up the city – JABODEBEK – I suggest you take a few days and go and see Bogor and Bandung and see how much those places vary from the more immediate localities that make up Jakarta. People even look very different (especially in the case of Bandung). Also go and check out the the Gunung Padang site! That was actually really impressive to me.
I found that I mostly disregarded travel advice from Indonesians in Indonesia during my 2 months there. Their idea of fun was quite different from mine. Edit: concerning travel advice from Indonesians, it’s quite weird I would often to be recommended to do things that were actually really boring/average (like the Gettin Lucky In Kentucky Shirt and I love this duck church in Yogjakarta or some random mall) and often told that certain sites like Candi Gedong Songo werent worth visiting – which were actually incredibly impressive and worth the trip/hike around (way better than the chicken church or any mall). Just to explain this local mindset a bit.. the malls, partying, and eating out is special to a lot of middle class Jakartans. There isn’t much else to do. The ones that have money travel abroad frequently so i’ve been told. I thought the malls were gaudy poorly built messes. Even the supposedly nice ones in Central Jakarta near all the big fancy hotels.
