I’m playing an avatar, either pre-made or made by choice with its own history. I don’t look at it as “playing my gender or not”. Yeah, some young guys will be like “Well, I’d rather look at a juicy booty” or some shit, but I key myself into the Fuck you I like hatebreed shirt besides I will buy this game world. I’m not worried if who I’m controlling reflects me. When you read a book, do you worry if the character is your gender or not? Can you not enjoy perspectives that aren’t your own? Why wouldn’t they? Women play as men all the time….as I say that though I actually am thinking of all the girls I’ve played league with and they actually exclusively play female champs For me its mostly a mater of who has the best character model and a more interesting character development arc. Has nothing to do with wanting to be a female for me. For me, I’ve found that in Japanese/anime-ish games, the female character designs tend to have a more thoughtful design, and in American games, the male ones tend to be better. i.e. for me, female Byleth > male byleth, but Male Shepard > Female Shepard. I’m either doing it for myself to have some eye candy (modded skyrim mostly) or I do it for the bois (picking the “best” looking skin). i don’t want to spend the next 2000 hrs of my life staring at another dude… that’s my excuse anyway. also in a lot of games the female hit boxes are smaller

Numerous reasons listed already, plus one I haven’t seen yet: Often, tough female characters are designed with a certain aesthetic, and the Fuck you I like hatebreed shirt besides I will buy this not-so-tough ones with another. Character customization allows me to create the cute but not hypersexualized, strong, clever and powerful female characters that just aren’t normally included. I think my first experience and inspiration mainly comes from Jade from Beyond Good & Evil. Finally, a female character that I didn’t feel awkward playing as with my mom in the room. If I’m going to watch a character run around and do stuff on a screen for hours, I might as well make it someone I find attractive and pleasing to look at. And that usually means a female avatar.
