I grew up in poverty and from what I’ve experienced, I can tell you that in Korea and in Korean communities here in the states, parents with deep pockets have a lot of power. They pretty much call all the shots. I went to a school in the states with someone who was, as far as I knew, closely associated with the Shin family – the family that owned Lotte. I was there on scholarship. She wasn’t. Let me tell you when I say she was a real bitch to deal with… she treated me like a peasant and bullied me relentlessly over my appearance, especially over my clothing. I wasn’t really well to do so I had very basic clothing – nothing designer or fancy. And the one time I was gifted a fancy wallet from my aunt in Korea, she ripped it out of my hands and cut it with a scissor… and then got away with it because her mother did the whole “my child could never do such a thing” nonsense with the administrator… and my all my favorite “well I guess you don’t need my donations”.
