In my experience, this is a point of contention in Michigan. I’ve always called them Crayfish, but I definitely know some disreputable types that would call them crawdads That map really checks out with where I’m from, most go for crawdad but no one will bat an eye at crawfish (I’m from the Midwest, most of these area maps for different words or traditions end up citing something I’ve literally never heard of right on top of where I grew up) There are also other countries! We would use the term crayfish and none of those others in Australia, though we also call them yabbies.

When I was doing my PhD I was a TA teaching biology labs. In one experiment we used crayfish.
