Most toxic managers at least know how to conceal their management style during the interview, so consider yourself lucky. Yea. I declined a few positions, for similar reasons. For me personally, I have to like who I work with as much if not more as liking what I’m doing. You’re with these people 40+ hours a week; you don’t need to be best friends but you have to get along. If not it makes work miserable. I think you made the right move. Definitely made the right choice. I’d rather take a pay cut to work for a good manager (with room for promotion) then take a raise to work for a shitty one.

I agree. But sometimes you get a bad vibe when interacting with someone. This guy would have been my direct manager. You’ve saved that company so much money by not going through onboarding, training, only to quit your bad boss in a few months. Day 3 I was actively searching for new roles. My wife said that I had less patience at home, and was just in a bad mood the entire time. A couple of months later, I had a new job. The one benefit is that I got to keep the pay raise, and worked for a much better boss. That’s the tradeoff, is that pay has a ratchet effect. Every time I’ve second guessed and did not go with my initial instincts, I regretted it. Every….single…..time. Always trust your gut OP.
