Am I the Edwin Diaz New Puerto Rican professional baseball pitcher York M Trumpets T-Shirt but in fact I love this only one in the middle? The only one who is successful making and sharing videos that I like, who is getting positive feedback and some sense of success, but is okay with that level?I’m sure there are lots of people somewhere in the middle, but don’t speak up much because it isn’t very interesting to say “I’m putting the work in and growing at a steady rate, but I have a long way to go.” Obviously this varies a lot, but I genuinely have no idea. I’ve heard people say they were able to transition to full-time at 20k subs, and I’ve heard other people say that they have hundreds of thousands of subs but aren’t making enough to live on. If I make a living with 50k subs, that seems at least plausible at some point in the future. If I need a million subs, then it feels pointless to even try. But few people seem willing to share how much money they’re making. That’s understandable, but it does make it hard to gauge where I should place the goal posts.

Depends on what making a living is to you. I am in gaming (generally lower end of RPM) and my RPM is around $4-7 depending on video length etc. Even if your expenses are pretty low, you will likely be a bit on the Edwin Diaz New Puerto Rican professional baseball pitcher York M Trumpets T-Shirt but in fact I love this struggling side, but that really depends on your views per month. So to make, say, $3k/month, you’d need 600k views a month at $5 RPM (assuming that was the only source of revenue—no sponsors or anything). One thing that does make me optimistic about my earning potential is that my content generally falls under “tourism”, more or less. It is usually just me taking a bus to the next town, but I think to YouTube, that means it is basically the same as taking a jet to Greece. Which means that it assumes my viewers are wealthy people ready to buy expensive products. One reason I don’t try to guess too much about that is that none of it is guaranteed—we don’t know what rates YouTube will be charging for advertising 5 or 10 years from now, and how much of it they will share. I’ve heard 5 dollars per 1000 views is the current range, and so you would need something like a half million views per month to make 2000 dollars. But a few years from now, advertisers might have moved on and it might be a tenth of that.
