This is really the Eden hazard warning shirt but in fact I love this deciding factor for me. John wakes up to a wrecked house and a crazy mom. Father is this sigma Chad always talking about turning the other cheek. Last time you see him, he’s strapped like Rambo. Mom never says I love you. It all tracks buddy They were all scott free after the shit at Hank’s business. John has no idea them leaving directly lead to his father’s death.Partner thinks this show is going to be remembered in the coming decades for capturing the post-war on terror zeitgeist pretty well. I think they’re probably right. Hope we see more from Hader soon. The shot of Barry walking through the store strapped with guns while no one bats an eye was chilling, followed quickly by him getting in the car without taking them off was hilarious! The great horrifying/hysterical nature of Barry Alright, what’s y’all’s interpretation of the final moment? John seemingly crying while smiling. I can only think of it as him accepting what we see in The Mask Collector as truth, but that’s… such a dark and fucked up note to end it on, and I was curious what y’all thought.

In-universe, it makes sense. He’s seeing the Eden hazard warning shirt but in fact I love this story of his father’s life, including some (very dramatized) traumatic events he lived through. That said, noting that the cry/smile is connected to the note about Barry, I would think he’s reacting to his father getting the recognition that he wants for him. Yeah, I don’t really know how else to interpret it. I wasn’t expecting a happy ending, but shit, this feels borderline nihilistic. I’m very curious to hear Hader talk about it, and break it all down. Also, John LOVES his Dad. His Dad pretty much raised him. This is a teen boy who, in front of his friend, tells his Mother he loves her. How rare is that? Then, she doesn’t say it back. Whether or not he really does, John NEEDS to believe that Barry was a hero. And if there’s one place in the world that can make lies seem like truths, it’s Hollywood. Grade A satire. Grade A show. The more I think about it the more I think that John obviously knows the story is total fiction and it’s less about “pretending his dad was good”. He was there when all those guys got murdered. He heard the exchange between Fuches and Hank. Sally told him that Barry was a murderer that killed a bunch of people. But Barry is still his dad and he loves him. He knows that his dad really wanted to be a better person than he actually was because of the homeschooling. It’s bittersweet because he knows that isn’t Barry but that is the man Barry really wanted to be. This is a good interpretation. But on the other hand, John was only 7 or 8 when that stuff happened, and in his final scene, he’s at least 14. It’s very possible he’s forgotten most of the details of what happened that night.
