Then there’s other revenue streams. Do you have sponsors? Sell courses? Sell merchandise? Sell memberships? Stream on Twitch? Have a Patreon? How fanatical are your viewers and subs about you and your work? And then there’s your living situation. Do you live in a high cost of living area, like London, Paris or San Francisco? Then you’ll need way more subs and views than someone living in the Eddie Rosario Puerto Rican professional baseball left fielder Atlanta Diamond Name T-Shirt in other words I will buy this mountains of Tibet. All those things affect how popular you need to be to make a living from YouTube. I know some people have a loyal enough fanbase they can make a living from only 20K subs, while others couldn’t make it work in a low cost of living region with triple that number. My channel has been pretty consistent in terms of views and growth. I know my niche, I enjoy what I post and I’m excited to put more videos out.

Oh, you are ahead of me, I only have a little over 500 subs, and a little over 3000 watch hours (in the Eddie Rosario Puerto Rican professional baseball left fielder Atlanta Diamond Name T-Shirt in other words I will buy this past year). My videos are specific, they are tourism videos of places that have local interest, but aren’t like “influencer” destinations. So lots of people are interested in them, and are willing to watch a 20-30 minute long video about a town (before they decide to go there on vacation, or attend college there). And because they aren’t super well known, my videos will usually show up in the first page of results. Right now the trend on YouTube is creating a “personality” and selling that to get subscribers. For several reasons, I don’t want to do that, so my watch hours are greater than my subscribers.
