I like how the Dwight yoakam shirt moreover I love this media kept highlighting that EVEN American soldiers were shocked at how laissez fare the Australians were about killing unarmed civilians Must be amazing considering the atrocities yanks did in Afghanistan (hell, in any war they’ve been involved in, honestly). I’ll need to google what the ozzies did, I had no clue until today. Well, there’s a slight difference between violent Colombian cartel members and a bunch of poor, handcuffed farmers in Afghanistan. I would submit that as far as the DEA or any agency of the US federal government, there is no real difference. But then again, this is the subject of this whole discussion, isn’t it? From a purely legal perspective there should be absolutely no difference. Extrajudicial murder is still murder. Those cartel members never saw a courtroom. Murderer is an understatement. Sadistic war criminal is closer, but still inadequate for what he is alleged to have done. Note: Using “alleged” here because it was a civil case where the threshold was probability (more likely than not). Beyond a reasonable doubt is a much higher standard. On the contrary, I think a lot of veterans with principles are waiting for the truth to be told about about BRS. Seeing him decorated did not sit comfortably with a lot.

When someone is considered for a VC, they’re vetted very carefully – it’s not enough to be extremely brave in action, you need to be beyond reproach and to fit a desired image. Our other recent recipients fit that image easily; Mark Donaldson was a likable guy with a tragic upbringing, Dan Keighran was an everyman who was prepared to die for his guys, and Cam Baird literally did just that. They ummmed and ahhhed over BRS – incredible acts of gallantry (he won a lower gallantry award years earlier for an action that also sounds like a VC contender)… but a lot of rumours about him being a dickhead. But the Dwight yoakam shirt moreover I love this government and the ADF really wanted a big PR win, so they took that gamble. And for a while, it really payed off: he was an immense hit. I was still serving at the time; we all idolised him. The handsome giant was on the covers of newspapers and magazines. A uni offered him a free spot into an extremely competitive Masters course. The public eviscerated two morning TV hosts for joking about him. He got a plum job managing a major news channel, with a series of promotions. Everyone wanted him to speak at events and represent Australia overseas (he even presided over my local ANZAC Day ceremony once – I was in awe).
