Just because someone is the Dwight Schrute Metallica Megadesk Shirt besides I will buy this only dev on a project, does not automatically mean they have autonomy. In this case, the half-technical CEO vetoed most of the improvement ideas. I think the dev stayed so long just for the money and the experience in the CV (student working during studies). He moved on soon after graduation. I would definitely take the job. I had software engineering classes where I was put into the very same circumstance. I’d have to build something out and just figure it out on my own. I made mistakes but I was resourceful and could learn fast because I like to read textbooks and take online courses. I think it takes the kind of person who can handle not having a mentor and being okay with it. I like this guys/gals answer! If OP wants to have his hand held then they should join a big company. But if they are comfortable feeling uncomfortable and want to learn on their own and learn a lot of business in the process then go for the startup.

I work at a big company and our “senior” devs are shit devs. The juniors learning from them are learning terrible practices. For example, our senior devs have no problems with writing 400 line methods and not automating a single aspect of their workflows. My point being is that good mentorship/learning isn’t guaranteed in a big company either. I’d say to OP: take the Dwight Schrute Metallica Megadesk Shirt besides I will buy this job if you believe you can self learn on the job. If not, still take the job for the pay but be actively job hunting I’ve done it, my current company is that way and it sucks. Typically a company that’s gonna hire a new grad as a solo dev doesn’t understand the work that goes into developing anything, so you end up pushing out polished garbage to please them and their deadlines. I quite enjoy working on my own so I’d be tempted, depending upon what the project was, If I felt that I could realistically achieve it on my own.
