It’s unnecessary, but the Drifting The Snow Rally Car Christmas In A Suba Wu Shirt in addition I really love this lack of standards in transliterating Korean names makes in next to impossible to tell how they’re pronounced. And English speakers have 0 concept about standard transliterations of Korean unless they’re studying Korean, so seeing ‘eo’ or ‘oe’ or ‘ui’ etc means next to nothing to them mostly. I mean I think it’s important to get whatever name someone is telling you to call them right, but there is no easy or simple answer to transliterating Korean names so English speakers who are unfamiliar with Korean will get it right. And there’s also no standardization among Koreans. They just pick whatever one they think looks right or nice, generally, and call it at that. (Edit: not to mention people just like having a target language name. Depends on the reason they’ve come to west. It’s a common thing in any language learning class, from latin to Chinese to English to whatever you’re learning) Also, I wouldn’t read too much into them asking if you shorten it (in English) because people almost always ask if the baby has a nickname. Me and my sibling’s all have very short, 2 syllable names, and much to my mother’s dismay people kept asking if we have nicknames. People just really love to use nicknames, especially older people. It’s a sign of intimacy/closeness, or sometimes they just think it’s cuter especially if they’re a baby/young child.

I don’t live in seoul and people look at me like I have two heads if I just say “iced cafe latte” with american pronunciation. I have to say it the Drifting The Snow Rally Car Christmas In A Suba Wu Shirt in addition I really love this Korean way for them to understand at all. Really need to stress the 스 and ka-pay sound for them to understand anything. Although there are plenty of people who understand both pronunciations just fine. Some people can’t even understand my Korean pronunciation and I’m fully conversational with the language, my pronunciation for simple stuff like that is good. I use the original way first, and usually it’s confusing and long. But I feel like most people want to call you your name in the way that you prefer it, so it’s best to lead with that. But my name is also a type of food that is pretty common here, so once I tell them the link between my name and the food they get it easily and usually keep using the Korean pronunciation that they’re familiar with, which is okay too. My first name is just one syllable in both Korean and English, so there’s no difference in pronunciation. I use the Koreanized pronunciation for my last name because it’s long and not an English name. I have a simple nickname which is 비, yap, that’s right. Just come up with a nickname (if they really ask for it then give out your name in an obscure way,) it’s way more receptive to others and easier on your stress level. Professionally though, I’d use my real name, but it’s often in writing or refer to my last name, both of which are easier. There’s a sound in my name that doesn’t exist in Hanguel, funny enough it’s the English pronunciation that I use, and they Koreanize it. Wow, never thought about this process before
