I was held under water in a pool by another kid and they let me go thinking I would surface but I didn’t know how to swim. The panic set in and as much as I wanted to flail and try to get anyone’s attention, it’s like my body just would not work. My arms wouldn’t make sweeping motions to move myself up and instead I was stuck in this pattern of clawing at the water and using the second or two my face got above the surface to try and breathe. I couldn’t call for help and I couldn’t get myself to the surface and it was exhausting. The only reason I’m alive is because an adult recognized the signs of drowning and jumped in fully clothed to drag me out.
