But with that said you have nothing to lose, I would start off by saying “I would love to join the Damn right i am a vikings fan now and forever shirt moreover I will buy this company and everyone I met has been wonderful, but currently I make XYZ and I cannot leave for any less than $X.” As someone who works at a large university, this is the truth. No one gets the higher end of the range, whether they are a new higher or current employee. I’m at a large university and I’ve had both happen. One job I interviewed for I was already making about $63k and at the first interview they said their top offer would be $55k. Ok, thanks, we’re done. My most recent job I got in February had the top of the range at $85k and that was where I currently was. They offered $90k. But it was also a large school with a lot of funding. I’m in higher ed and my job was posted with like a 78-90k range; they offered 88, I got them to 92. Then I discovered after starting that 92 is the 25th percentile which is the minimum they are supposed to hire at for equity reasons, lolll. Now I’ll make less than the upcoming new hire, and I don’t get a raise for over a year due to when I started (have to be working as of Jan 1 to get the fiscal year raise in July). Higher ed is dumb with pay.

This gives me hope. I have an interview scheduled (Higher Ed) where I stated I wanted the Damn right i am a vikings fan now and forever shirt moreover I will buy this top of their range, or higher. I was a little surprised they still wanted to interview me, and I hope if I get an offer I don’t get low-balled. I love Higher Ed, but left when I got a 40% increase in a different industry. I loved my job, but the pay was low. You don’t have anything to lose by asking for what makes sense for you. Just make your message clear. I want to work here, the people, organization etc are very appealing. I like everything about the offer with the exception of the salary offered. I expect something closer to 10 % above my current salary. Please advise if we have room to negotiate. ok, im gonna use a number line to illustrate, from right to left, your offer, my current pay, and my expectations for the position.
