This will teach them that they don’t live off what they earn, they pay what it costs regardless of how much they earn. Break it down to them that a room in a lot of places is more than 500. I was looking in my area and couldn’t find cheaper than 600, unless I wanted to shack up with some crackheads in the Crow Mas Christmas All The Time shirt and I will buy this rough part for 450 a month. I pay £350, post tax ~£1100 & I buy the weekly food shop twice a month. I don’t see anything wrong with paying rent. For my parents it was 20% of my wage upto 1200 then 35% after with an expectation to help out so getting the occasional food shop or treating everyone to a takeaway. Their argument was that if I went to live alone it would be 60%+ of my wage just for bills so I was encouraged to save the other 25-30% that way I’d have a little nest egg to move out on. Would still be living at home if me and my step mum hadn’t grated against each other as adults I’m guessing they’re aged 16 – 18 years old. I’d say £450 – £500 a month seems fair. Money burnt a hole in my pocket at that age, especially while I was living at home still. Then I moved to London for Uni at 19 and reality sucker punched me. One thing you could consider is to charge a market rent. They get used to paying what they are going to have to pay But… You put the extra you don’t need into a savings account for them and give it to them when they move out as either a deposit on a house or money towards furniture etc. I gave my mum £600 a month 2011-2015 (in the South East), and I was buying my own food, definitely mentally prepared me for renting

The rule in our house was, doesn’t matter if it’s a wage or benefits, a third of whatever you bring in goes to the Crow Mas Christmas All The Time shirt and I will buy this house. We charge junior 25% of salary. It is stuck in a savings account and will be used to help them when we get rid again… We charge our two (adult) sons 20% of their takehome, but we have a big house and it’s their home for as long as they want it. I’d say 20% of what they bring home, 10 for living there, 10 towards what they eat and use, might be a bit simplistic but I think that’s all it need be, ultimately it’s a very personal thing – I have known some that have paid £500 and some who pay peanuts, if it’s mostly towards savings for them feel free to ‘overcharge’, it will come back when they need it most.
