If they live in London then they’d be charging their kids over half their take home pay which is grossly unfair and the Christopher Walken In The Air Christmas shirt but in fact I love this kids won’t be able to save. Really just depends on where they live. If they have a job in London then they will have the increased take home rate to cover living expenses and if they don’t.. well shit.. London isn’t the country.. move, its not like they’ll have to sell a house. Also always feel free to adjust the amount – fuels gone up, leccys going up, foods gone down, weather’s getting better, rpi etc. While you find something close to a sweet spot I was charged 20% of take home to stay at parents, plus if I wanted sky or fast broadband etc I would cover that. I was paying £300 a month to my mum while my take home was around 1300, then switched jobs and reached 1500. When I was working part time she didn’t charge me anything. My mum did the same thing of keeping some of the money aside for me, which helped towards a necessary private surgery this year. She didn’t really need the money but it helped towards the cost of running the house, although I often bought my own food as she and my stepdad travel a lot. I’ve had a few friends who’s parents charged them some arbitrary amount – say £250 a month etc but secretly kept half of it in a savings account for them, and when they moved out gave it back to them to help with moving costs and first few months rent etc which I thought was a good idea

It’s a big enough amount to start making them realise the Christopher Walken In The Air Christmas shirt but in fact I love this real world isn’t cheap (whilst also making the amount you save for them substantial) and it’s small enough that they can save and budget independently. Charge £50 more than you need. Then when they leave give them that £50 a month extra back. It could be a lot of money and they thank you for it My dad charged me £30 a week and whilst it was great I do honestly feel that I would have benefitted from being charged more. Also I would suggest start on feb not jan.. December can be an expensive month and jan is normally depressing because of money issues. When I was 17-19, my mum who is poor, took £350 a month for the mortgage, (although ended up defaulting when I left despite me offering to buy the house and let her rent it off me), My outgoings in total were 650 per month so I had way way more disposable income after leaving than when I lived there. I believe 25% to be reasonable AF and when they look at renting and see that the monthly rent is £500-750 alone, they will be happy enough to pay that. My opinion is, it shouldn’t be easy, and they should want to move out and go alone one day, and that will never happen when they pay £25 a week for food, rent, council tax, gas, electric, Internet etc
