Hmm.. on my id it’s spelt Wonkun. And yes, my name has been butchered since I was in grade school. It’s pronounced the Clyde The Frog Inspired Shirt Furthermore, I will do this way it’s spelt, but I’ve gotten wonkoon, yonkim, and even joaquin (yes like the actor lol). I wanna say it’s partly my fault, but the okie twang makes Won-kin flow better and it’s just easier to tell people, that’s how you “pronounce” it. Thinking back, or “one gun” would of been the move bc Oklahoma haha. Oh god I bet the people most guilty of butchering would also think One Gun is actually a little bit bad ass and cool. My Slavic three syllable given name sounds almost exactly like a Korean full name. The first vowel sound is slightly different, but it’s very close. My family name, on the other hand, is so completely unpronoucable in Korean that I don’t even try to koreanize it. My inlaws and Korean friends just use my given name name as though it was a full name and seem to find it hilarious. Luckily my nickname actually happens to be an obscure, but Korean name. So literally everyone except my immediate family can say my name in Korean or English. I am used to the NA one, but I say it with the European pronunciation here because it can be more easily transliterated to hangul and leads to less confusion. In my ideal world immigration would let us register an official name in hangul on our IDs and I would forget about my English name entirely as long as I live here.

I’m English and my name is Pat, If I pronounce it normally people get confused so I go with the Clyde The Frog Inspired Shirt Furthermore, I will do this more American/Korean or whatever for simplicity. My name is a signal syllable name and a super common loan word here to boot. So I’m lucky enough to have never had anyone mispronounce my name here. My only issue is there are a few words/sounds in the language that sound like my name, so I’m constantly looking around to see if someone is talking to me. I just give them the Korean transliteration because it’s a common/popular french name, so Koreans know it and the N has been victimized by being transliterated as an ㅇ. I prefer ㄴ. It’s also really easy to just write in Korean without it sounding whack, so I just use it to avoid any confusion whatsoever about vowels. I just say my Korean name first and leave it at that unless they ask. Then I use the NA pronunciation of my English name. The only time I voluntarily use (one of) the Korean pronunciation(s) of my English name is when I’m putting my name down at like a restaurant or work or something kind of officialish I say my name the way it is pronounced and all spell it phonetically rather than the naming system that Korea took from Japan (which was shitty to begin with). Luckily I can phonetically spell my name with Korean characters. When they first announced her name I expected a wave of confusion since both are written the same way in Korean, and Koreans are quite familiar with Daniel as a name by now
