Saying there is a police culture problem is not excusing the bad behavior caused by it, nor is it an attempt to underplay it. It’s ok to analyze the root causes of problems. You kind of have to to find solutions. I think the point they were getting at is that there has been ongoing rhetoric for decades in the US that “some demographics” are just inherently prone to committing crime/acts of violence, while a large number of the people who feel that way simultaneously wave off police brutality as something that just needs a bit of elbow grease to fix. Yeah if anything what I’ve learned is that if cops surround your house with guns drawn and tell you to come you don’t come out right away. You wait for them to chill a bit and have higher level law enforcement on the scene or else they just assume your plan is to go down shooting. That’s the simplistic view. It’s more complex than that. If your police training tells you to be aggressive and take down threats with your gun, making you thus trigger happy, who is to blame? The people doing the training and building the culture or the person who’s trigger happy because of the training and culture? Or is a little of both?
