If you count a song with the Cigarettes After Sex Vintage 2008 Apocalypse T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this full band, I would say it’s Loveland. It’s just dripping with David Byrne. That song combines all of the basic elements we love about them, but with this Talking Heads kind of thing that is just nuts. i listened to that tape so damn much that by the time I got it on CD it was in a different key and sounded weird for the first 20 or so spins RuPaul credits the B-52’s with giving him the break that started his career by casting him in their video for Love Shack. I had their debut album on tape as a kid and always imagined I’d grow up to own a Plymouth Satellite, faster than the speed of light. But alas, I went with Subaru. Probably a hell of a juxtaposition…I mean for as happy as their music is, they all faced judgment and discrimination for being queer (even though Cindy is not). Then you have Ricky’s death, some shitty management/label shit. They were…Love Shack is an absolute miracle. Almost as much as Smells Like Teen Spirit. Really. No one wanted either song to be a hit. I randomly sang that at work once. Some looked at me like I had lost my mind, but a few of them started singing along with me. Makes me want to sing it in other places, to find out who gets it. I’m not sure I can express just how cool and edgy they were in 1980. They had at least one legendary appearance on SNL. Love them. I had a drive with the B52’s on just the other day. Such good feelings. Loved them since I heard Rock Lobster way back when and finally got to see them in 2009.

Some great tunes. I wonder if the Cigarettes After Sex Vintage 2008 Apocalypse T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this guitarist (who pulled a LOT of the performance weight) wrote the guitar parts in “Rock Lobster” and “Private Idaho”. Truly inventive. First introduction I had to them was SNL. I think. They played Rock Lobster. Honestly thought it was just another comedy skit. Mesopotamia was their Paul’s Boutique moment. Completely underrated when released as an EP, but genius on every track. Where I grew up, being a Biftytwos fan took some guts. For me it was pure love. That guitar style and kate and cindy! I will always be grateful that they were a thing when I was in high school. Blasting their music on my walkman while waiting for the school bus made 6:00 am suck less. I wasn’t a fan of them back in the day but when they come on now and I analyze their music. They were so innovative and daring. Not just the all inclusivity if their music but the actual music itself. I wouldn’t have the balls to write rock lobster. Yet it was a mega hit. Saw this recent “final” tour, was happy just to see them even if they didn’t sound the same – they sounded AMAZING. 1980 was a huge year for this group. The band had only really gotten together a few years earlier, and their debut album had unexpectedly climbed the charts. John Lennon was calling Rock Lobster an inspiration fir Double Fantasy, and the B-52s one of his favorite bands. Depending on when this was taken, Wild Planet was in the works or out in the world and also making waves on the Hot 100.
