But then when it comes to situations like this, all the burden of the situation is put on the civilian. If they don’t act perfectly, the cop gets to kill them because they “fear for their life”. Its a fucked up dynamic and it needs to change. Why are the trained, paid professionals the ones who get to panic? Part of the job is that police are the ones burdened with de-escalation. Yeah, it’s risky, but it’s the job.

I know many officers do a great job on a daily basis, but enough don’t that you have to inspect the culture with a critical eye and determine that something has gone wrong. Even if the bad cases get more attention than good policing, they happen enough that there has to be a problem.
