This is really good advice! Before baby I put my husband before myself. Now he is number 3. Now it goes BABY!, me (barley, if I have time/ energy to care for myself) and then husband. Most days I’m so exhausted, my one gesture is to make him a cup of tea before bed, but everything else has stopped, in my mind I am caring for a new human and he is an adult who can care for himself. It’s like a life vest situation and I need him to kick his own legs cause I can barley keep my head above water with baby in my arms. Yes!! Exactly. Everything can feel like it’s a priority and an emergency, especially if you’re experiencing PPA. Once you can untangle the mess of priorities in your head, get them down and communicated together and have a joint action plan you both agree on, it goes a lot smoother. We have to check in all the time on how burnt out we are too. On those days when someone is at their limit, the other one needs to step up and ask what the other’s priorities are.

Yes! My list of priorities and my husbands are so different so we are constantly having to talk through it and reset from time to time to realign. When we don’t, things go south and one of us ends up getting super frustrated. Exactly! It’s like you sometimes have completely different experiences of what is important or frustrating and sometimes you’ll be having two different conversations and it’s a shock! But now knowing how specific I have to be with what I need out loud it is getting easier. Sometimes there is a bit of “why do I need to spell it out when it’s as obvious as can be” but that feeling is getting less sharp.
