There are plastics, so called “food grade” plastics that don’t leach chemicals. But plastics still degrade over time creating microplastics so this solution is far from ideal. Veritasium did a video explaining it. They are NOT made to reduce evaporation! There’s bromide and chlorine in the reservoir water, and in bright sunlight they form bromate which is carcinogenic. These balls prevent that from happening. It’s funny how many people deem a multi-million dollar investment nonsensical based on basic information they got from a video with sexy background music and a line “300 million gallons is enough to fill 100 – 1000 olympic-sized swimming pools”

Have you even read those articles? Or are you being sarcastic? Because, for their purpose, preventing sunlight from interacting with chlorine treated water producing bromide, has been a success. I think they heated up the water and or the water evaporated quicker from the surface of the balls. The solution to global warming ? More oil, to produce plastic balls, to pollute the remaining fresh water. Genius. My favorite part is that the balls are filled with water. ‘To conserve water, we filled a bunch of balls with water’ Water can’t evaporated if it’s trapped inside plastic. Why not put all the water into plastic balls? I should become a scientist. Title seems deceptive. The clip is from a Veritasium video that never mentions water scarcity. LA reservoir employed ball to shade chlorinated water from sun, where the sun and chlorine would otherwise react with bromide in the water to become toxic bromate. Shade ball likely reduces some evaporation. Together with using less chlorine (to combat algae growth), the savings in chemical costs and avoiding lost revenue from evaporation likely pays for the balls.
