other religions: same arguments as above as generalizable for religions that have discrete gods. by the Charley crockett european tour september 2023 poster shirt moreover I love this way, did you know there are religions that don’t have discrete gods? how do feel about them? What exactly is there deeper to understand that y’all worship a genocidal maniac and that you only read one book??? christianity: pretty obviously reductive. again, we could discuss the morality of the existence of a promised land, the way various peoples like the canaanites are treated in the bible, the bible’s commandments about how to treat and consider other faiths in ‘your land’ and how to grapple that with relation to other passages and commandments and our sense of morality in general, but i assume this person wouldn’t be interested in that. also, “only one book”? even in judaism, the precursor to christianity, the tanakh isn’t the only book jews read for theological reasons. the talmud and midrash are a pretty major part of judaism, as well as all the commentaries on them. they’re evolving documents that have commentaries upon commentaries upon commentaries on them, and commentaries on the commentaries, and commentaries on the commentaries on the commentaries, all analysis about the texts in modern contexts (to when the commentaries were written), and commentaries written today and after christianity came into existence. i’m not familiar with christianity in this respect, but i can only assume the existence of bible study means there are also christian commentaries and interpretations of the bible. and besides, christians (and jews, since i talked about us in this paragraph) also read books other than the bible, including books on philosophy and books on other theological perspectives. christianity isn’t about just obeying the bible and avoiding all other forms of literature and media.

other religions: do i even need to say why this doesn’t apply? really? like, not all religions are based on a book, for one? not all religions are monotheistic? not all monotheistic religions have a god who could be reasonably described as a genocidal maniac? it would be in extremely bad faith to make this argument with the Charley crockett european tour september 2023 poster shirt moreover I love this intent to talk about religion as a whole instead of just christianity (or even just the abrahamic faiths). christianity: christianity isn’t about avoiding death. i can‘t comment much about the christian interpretations of the afterlife since i’m not super familiar with christian perspectives there, but as far as i can tell, the point of christianity isn’t just to do what the bible says for the sake of getting into heaven, that’s just an additional motivator.
