The idea that they do it as a just in case measure now though is bollocks. If phones really were able to do that then they would be required to be stored in your luggage along with screwdrivers. Think about it. If you had a device that could crash a plane they wouldn’t let you have it Old USA-made altitude sensors were pretty crap RF-wise and use frequencies they are not supposed to be using. Those frequencies then overlap with some mobile phone bands and potentially can lead to aircraft showing wrong altitude – that would be pretty big deal when landing so they chose to blanket-ban mobiles instead of fixing altimeters, because lots of aircraft would need to be re-certified and stuff.
