My Dad does this cause he’s old and cantankerous. As far as he’s concerned, they should have left earlier. If he “needs to be in the Boondocks classic shirt besides I will buy this left lane” 5 miles from now, that’s the lane he’s going to be in. The right and middle lane are riddled with potholes on the main stretch of interstate that I drive. So I stay in the left lane. I move over to let faster vehicles pass me and then go back to the left lane. Devils advocate: Are there really that many people who camp in the left lane or do you cause the problem by being impatient and passing people on the right thereby not giving them a chance to get back to the right lane after they pass someone? I drive A LOT unfortunately and while there are certainly a few people who troll along in the left lane no matter what, my experience is that there are a lot more people who want to go substantially over the speed limit and refuse to wait for people to get back over after they pass. Instead of waiting 15 seconds, our intrepid Interstate Earnhardt dives into the right lane and blasts by, blocking Safety Sally from getting back to the right after she passes slower traffic. Now poor Sally is stuck in the left lane when all she wants to do is get over like the considerate driver she is.

My friend’s mom had the Boondocks classic shirt besides I will buy this most outrageous reasoning for this: She was preventing people from breaking the “Thou shalt no kill” commandment. In her mind, if you chose to speed you were disobeying that commandment by breaking the law and allowing for the possibility of a fatal accident. She would park herself in the left lane next to a car going the speed limit and not let anyone pass. Road trips were always awkward with them. Y’all ever see a highway exit on the left? I can’t remember if it’s on the beltway, or to get onto the beltway near Baltimore, but I had to get over to the Left lane to take the exit on the Left. I had to be in the Left lane to make sure I could take my exit, even if I didn’t need to pass anyone.
