Side note and maybe hot take, I absolutely love premium. Idk why I waited so long. Probably for the Bonk’s Adventure Turbografx Title Screen Shirt But I will love this same reasons a lot of you do. For me, I can work and have music or YT playing in the background or in my ear and not having to stop what I’m doing, take my gloves off, and grab my phone with my still dirty hands to skip ads, or ignore them is a blessing. Over the course of a day, a week, a month it really adds up. I forget what a blessing it is for me until someone without premium starts making me listen to their shit. It’s bad enough having all the in video ads, I kinda feel bad for ppl with regular YT. I didn’t say I didn’t trust that, and I do have and pay for premium aswell. The ads removal, iOS pic in pic, and download ability when I travel on flights are mostly why.

But just because they add a new tier to paying users, doesn’t mean they don’t manipulate the Bonk’s Adventure Turbografx Title Screen Shirt But I will love this other free tiers. Whether it happens now or before or later, the resolution options, and bitrates will and do change. People are fooling themselves. It’s like ads too, start with a few, add some more, make some unskippable, etc. and since YouTube premium, they have been making more changes to ads that are worse for the free tiers. Right now, 1440p/4K are basically a free way to circumvent this new paywall because even if you don’t have the highres screen to actually display the higher resolution, you still get the higher bitrate associated with those resolutions by choosing them. So by choosing 4K on a 1080p screen, you are seeing the video on a higher bitrate than this new 1080 premium format would provide. It doesn’t really make sense from YT’s perspective. You are just making people choose higher resolutions which costs you more bandwidth and doesnt sell more premium. So yeah, the only logical step for them is to eventually also put the higher resolutions behind the same paywall.
