It’s more of a matter of not having college education will close doors, in my experience. Since I dropped out of one, I don’t put any education on my resume. I get calls and interviews based off the Bill Madlock 1985 Topps American Baseball Player MLB T-Shirt and I love this info on my resume, then they ask about training, and when they find out I’m self-taught/learned on the job, their interest just plummets. I go from a serious candidate to a “maybe as a junior profile” despite having half a decade of experience in various related positions. Not sure what the situation is like in the US, but in Europe I find that a lot of job listings are ghost ads. They are only made to project economic strength for the company, calm existing employees who are overworked and demanding new hires (management can claim it’s not their fault; they’re trying but they aren’t getting any serious applications), and to maintain a pipeline of potential candidates in case someone quits or has to be fired for some reason. This means job-searchers spend a lot of time and effort on applications for positions they would never have gotten no matter what, and get discouraged. Consulting companies also love to call up anyone whose resume they can find, set up an interview, waste an hour having the candidate go over their entire life story despite it all being in the resume they were called based off of, and then never calling them back with an offer, simply because the interview and data collection counts in the interviewer’s stats and helps them meet their quotas.

Conversely, having degrees or diplomas and applying for unqualified positions will result in doors closing because HR reps and employers will consider that you would be bored at the Bill Madlock 1985 Topps American Baseball Player MLB T-Shirt and I love this position, grow frustrated, then quit shortly after being hired. Doesn’t matter how bad the applicant needs the income for survival, there just seems to be a common consensus that unqualified labour should go to people without experience nor training. I’m also not pulling this one out of thin air, some HR reps have shared these worries with me during interviews. No matter what I said, they were dead set on the fact that I was too competent for the job. Overall, the real game changer is networks. If you know people who know people who have hiring authority, then you’re miles closer to getting hired than anyone with a degree but no network. Almost all jobs I’ve gotten in my life, except for the worst ones, including freelance work, have been through family and friends knowing someone who could use my skills.
