Most people won’t go through the hassle, but I’d imagine small claims court could make the host pay if you can prove the listing went to someone else, such as finding it available at a higher price elsewhere, leaving a letter for the guest that replaced you if you know where the unit is, or pretending to be another guest making a high offer that gets accepted. Never ‘cancel’. It’s their job to cancel on you, because it hurts them as they listed and then unlisted on short notice. Them them reap what they sow. We got a plumber out right away but the ceiling is going to be open and drying out for at least a week plus drywall and repainting. It happens and when it does it can be much worse with an unoccupied space.
