In-universe, it makes sense. He’s seeing the Beware Of Hitchhiking Ghosts Halloween shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this story of his father’s life, including some (very dramatized) traumatic events he lived through. That said, noting that the cry/smile is connected to the note about Barry, I would think he’s reacting to his father getting the recognition that he wants for him. Yeah, I don’t really know how else to interpret it. I wasn’t expecting a happy ending, but shit, this feels borderline nihilistic. I’m very curious to hear Hader talk about it, and break it all down. Also, John LOVES his Dad. His Dad pretty much raised him. This is a teen boy who, in front of his friend, tells his Mother he loves her. How rare is that? Then, she doesn’t say it back. Whether or not he really does, John NEEDS to believe that Barry was a hero. And if there’s one place in the world that can make lies seem like truths, it’s Hollywood. Grade A satire. Grade A show. The more I think about it the more I think that John obviously knows the story is total fiction and it’s less about “pretending his dad was good”. He was there when all those guys got murdered. He heard the exchange between Fuches and Hank. Sally told him that Barry was a murderer that killed a bunch of people. But Barry is still his dad and he loves him. He knows that his dad really wanted to be a better person than he actually was because of the homeschooling. It’s bittersweet because he knows that isn’t Barry but that is the man Barry really wanted to be. This is a good interpretation. But on the other hand, John was only 7 or 8 when that stuff happened, and in his final scene, he’s at least 14. It’s very possible he’s forgotten most of the details of what happened that night.

Denial. Sally told him his dad was a murderer. Sally told him the Beware Of Hitchhiking Ghosts Halloween shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this movie was bullshit. But I don’t think he trusts her opinion because she’s so closed off and uncaring. He probably remembers much of what happened. He was there for the shootout and he wasn’t THAT young, though it’s possible he could have blocked it out. He only has positive memories of his dad, and even though Sally was seemingly not interested in lying to him, the news and media clearly spun this to be a story about a heroic ex marine. It’s easier to just believe he’s a hero for now because it’s easier to reconcile his memory of his father with the media spin, so I think he’s going to. Sally’s truth falling on deaf ears is also just so in line with her life.
