With the Bartender may be a bad influence but damn i’m fun lip shirt in other words I will buy this recent war between Israel and Hamas, there’s a lot of heated rhetoric from all sides about “WWIII”, escalations, most countries taking a side, Turkey coming out as very anti-Israel, etc, etc? I’ll admit, I’ve been a little freaked out about the state of the world and where we might go from here. Most “rational-sounding” takes I’ve read involve something to the effect of “we’ve seen things like this before, it’s tragic but nothing new for the world”. I’m not that young, but this is my first time really paying attention to something like this and I can’t help but feel like everything is more on edge than it felt in previous middle eastern tensions/conflicts. I guess the root of my question – is what’s going on in the world as unprecedented as it feels; how concerned, as an American citizen, should I be about the state of the world, the near future, etc?I think the main difference between this and previous conflicts is how unhinged the politicians and media figures in the US and UK in particular have become. I don’t think the conflict is anything new, we’ve just lost the ability to have an adult conversation about it. The sabre rattling from various international parties is not new either, sadly. Thanks for your comment, this is helpful. I think a lot of my being concerned about it comes from social media and how insane people act on it. For example any tweet about any update regarding the war has everyone in the replies saying like “this is it, WWIII”, “buckle up for the nukes” and stuff like that. Seeing that shit over and over again has started to freak me out and make me question what I think is rational imo

Never, ever, ever trust social media. Every site and app is designed to boost controversy. “Here’s an extensive series of 120 posts explaining exactly what’s going on in the Bartender may be a bad influence but damn i’m fun lip shirt in other words I will buy this Middle East” will never get even 1% of the attention that “lmao they’re gonna nuke us” will. It’s very easy to be freaked out by end-of-the-world rhetoric, especially if you’re younger or just new to social media – I know I’ve done it heaps of times. It’s important to pay attention to what’s happening in the world (particularly, I’d argue, as an American), but social media is not the way to do that. People have cried WW3 regarding Ukraine for 2 years and it’s still just a localised conflict. Because even Putin knows that the alternative is nukes.
