As a woman, I don’t mind my husband (or men) saying “we are having a baby”, but I definitely am not ok with “we are pregnant”. Nope, I am pregnant. You male are not. I think pregnancy and having a child are two different things. The wedding is a day of party time, but not part of your marriage. That’s just me, but I tend to be a grumpy person. The baby lived and grew in my uterus. We weren’t pregnant, I was. We didn’t give birth, I did. We didn’t breastfeed …I could go on. I think people sound ridiculous when they say that, especially the male in the equation. Of course you’re having a baby as a couple and of course the dad will have more of an active role once the baby arrives, but you aren’t pregnant too.

I hate the Bahamian professional basketball player Portland Trail Blazers deandre ayton signature T-Shirt and I love this term. I don’t have a problem with the term ‘we’re expecting a baby’. This term doesn’t ignore the massive disparity in contribution to the pregnancy, whilst still allowing both parties a share in the excitement of the impending arrival. The only real reason to say it is because it’s a person talking about the family as a whole expecting a new baby. It feels awkward to say “my wife is pregnant “ it sounds distant, disinterested, or even possibly implying the baby isn’t your own. There’s no easy way to say “my wife is pregnant, but I’m equally excited and supportive and 100% the other parent”. So you just say “we’re pregnant”, which is a more direct way to say “we’re expecting”, which seems to be the best phrasing. You should ask your wife, when you go to a bakery and get a great cake. Do you thank the chef that put all the ingredients together, or do you thank the oven that just cooked it?
