Yeah it’s these two. Sonora is Mexican-owned, they’re from Sonora (duh) so it’s wheat tortillas. I think Chingada is too. Tacos Padre in Borough market is not Mexican-owned but the guy has worked at Pujol so has some understanding and the quality is very good. I think it’s important to remember that there isn’t the same access to the full set of fresh quality ingredients and the kind of prices you can get in Mexico or even most of the USA so it’s going to be hard for places to replicate exactly what you can get there.

Kol is super interesting, a very talented Mexican chef applying a Mexican philosophy to UK ingredients, often incredibly successfully. But it’s definitely not ‘Mexican’ so near that in mind I am sooo happy to see that Sonora Taqueria is not too far from where I live! Will absolutely try that one. My tops would be La Chingada or Sonora. Has that punch of flavour and heat. Raw onion and radish to top it off with amazing salsas. KOL is incredible. But it is 100% NOT authentic. Santiago uses pretty much only British ingredients to recreate flavours which means he doesn’t use lime (he uses a pickled fir tree leaf if I remember correctly). Doesn’t change the fact that the flavours are incredible. Santo Remedio is run by a beaut Mexican couple and their food is lovely, but it’s toned down a bit and it’s also lost some of the edge that proper Mexican Street food has (less in your face and tries too hard to be modern) El Pastor is always called ‘not authentic’ but I’ve never figured it why specifically. I’d actually rate it. It does great tasting food, fab salsas, and generally good vibes and cocktails Proper Tacos in Nags Head is fab and the epitomy of a local spot. Run by a lovely woman and the food is great. But execution not quite as strong as La Chingada or Sonora
