Honestly this really depends where Americans are from. Midwesterners do this a lot. It doesnt cost me anything to send them some good will, and maybe they’re having a bad day and they will appreciate it. I say please and thank you and “have a good day” to nearly every stranger I interact with at a cash register or in any service industry regardless of tips. I am appreciative of their help and I do hope their day is good.

Some people prefer others to be more straightforward. Saves a lot of time and guessing. I know that Asians tend to be more evasive as well, you’ll never get a straight answer about what’s wrong. And sometimes I think about how weird it is, Americans and Asians are culturally very far apart but they still share this trait. Some people see it as politeness, others as hypocrisy. UK people seem rather American hostile on here. Really, most Europeans do. I think the hostility online is mainly just people on the internet being assholes and jokes which get taken too far sometimes.
