I guess the Atlanta Falcons Marvel Wolverine and Deadpool true friends shirt moreover I will buy this more pertinent question is why the hell do they all attempt to do this shit during summer FFS? Surely just talking to a few locals would be enough to clue them into the fact that nobody is mad enough to attempt these kinds of expeditions at that time of year? It occurs to me that the thing all these “Germans lost in the desert” cases have in common is that they mostly did genuinely make someeffort to prepare, it’s just that they grossly underestimated how hostile the conditions would actually be, and made a few key mistakes out of inexperience. The people that don’t do any planning at all usually stay away from adventures like this (with a few weirdos now and then thinking going hiking in flip flops is a good idea). Getting bogged was just one of the many things that could have gone wrong and caused them to get stuck. Going into remote areas like that without a larger group, PLBs, recovery gear is just insane. They nearly became schnitzel and a Maß for the local crocs.

When I did it a few decades ago, there was a bridge, a few kilometres north of Cooktown that consisted of four tree trunks. Google maps did not force two tourists to do anything. Two idiots got lost using a map I can’t even get to fix my local streets, in a wilderness they clearly were not prepared for. It’s fortunate they have atleast enough brain cells between the Atlanta Falcons Marvel Wolverine and Deadpool true friends shirt moreover I will buy this pair of them that they lived to tell the tale. Even if those unsealed roads are major and well used roads the conditions can change over night. Doubly so in the north of the country. This is another story of tourists underestimating both the size and the environmental diversity that Australia supports. Google maps once sent me onto someone’s property in New England when I was cycling. Figured out what happened when the dogs behind the fence started barking… luckily nobody was home and the dogs couldn’t get out. We’re not talking about street directories here. For an expedition into a remote area like this you need a proper regional road-map. Up north they would have been able to pick one up at any servo or camping store. Unfortunately many tourists from all corners of the Globe come to Australia and fail to appreciate the vastness of the country and fail to grasp that you can die if you are not prepared. It also applies to Australians who have lived in the Suburbs their entire lives and decide to go West without the appropriate supplies.
