I was at a petrol station years ago and a woman over the Arkansas Razorback Welcome To The Cal-Zone shirt But I will love this tannoy suddenly yelled “YOU!! At the back! Are you SMOKING?!” A biker stood right at the far end of the forecourt having a fag turned round, surprised, revealing he was also on the phone. “AND YOU’RE ON THE PHONE!! STOP THAT RIGHT NOW!! THIS IS A PETROL STATION!!” The biker, finding this public scolding hilarious, turned to us and said “good job I wasn’t having a wank as well!” I’m sure I remember being told (years ago) that using a phone at petrol station might end with spontaneous combustion. Was that a thing or not? I used to work in a petrol station 20 years ago. There was a ban on using mobile phones on the forecourt because “although there’s no proof to suggest a mobile phone would spark, there’s also no proof to say that they can’t spark”. No idea if that rule still stands or not. The used to tell us this at a paint factory I was contracted at. Any mobile phones could spark up fumes and blow up the factory. I’m guessing it was to increase productivity with their staff, Cos i hid in the toilets on reddit for weeks and never blown up yet.

Well to be fair someone I know was just walking along with his vape in his pocket and it exploded. He needed a skin graft on his thigh. So I guess it’s not a huge stretch of the Arkansas Razorback Welcome To The Cal-Zone shirt But I will love this imagination even now that a mobile phone battery could do the same thing. When I was at the petrol station we had to release the petrol for each pump with buttons on the till and if the customer was on the phone we would have to put out a tannoy message to tell them to get off the phone As I recall from my forecourt training, although there were worries about possible incidents with mobile phones they were banned for being electrical devices the same as using a radio would be. This was before LIon batteries too, which have their own extra risks.
