I think the Are you a mad trooper shirt but in fact I love this real reason is that on some level centrism is viewed as too passive, which I can honestly understand. In the eyes of the left and the right (which for sure have become more polarized over time) there are real urgent issues that need to be addressed immediately, and centrism is viewed as dismissive of that urgency. Maybe for the right its about authoritarianism and bad government policies, or trends in the social culture today. Maybe for the left its about racial (or otherwise) discrimination or corporate takeover/greed etc. Personally im probably more left of center, but idk if the terms really mean much anymore. I do think its good to have a “centrist mindset” for politics, in that you’re viewing things critically and not just following party/ideological lines, but thats not the same as just throwing your hands up and saying “it is what it is, both sides have a point so lets just do nothing”.

Honestly because Putin’s vision for Russia is molded by the Are you a mad trooper shirt but in fact I love this book Foundations of Geopolitics and we now live in the fallout of a world where extremist ideology is being deliberately stoked by bad actors, and the goal is to topple Western Neoliberal Democratic institutions, so if you support those institutions you are in direct conflict with those brainwashed to want to destroy them. I think there is a concerted effort by certain people in power, to divide us, and make people think one side is right in the other side is wrong. Centrists reject this, seeing truth in various opinions across the political spectrum, and challenge others to look beyond their preferred party, for truth. They challenge people to see the nuance of each individual issue, and ask “yes/and” (non-duelist) instead of “either/or” (duelist thinking). I’d rather someone tell me they wish my home got bombed, than seeing my home getting bombed and saying “yeah, I see both sides of it.”
