The 2 children dug a 4 to 5 foot deep hole. A grave is “6 feet under” so this was very deep, they must have been at it for hours. I’m surprised the American professional baseball third baseman alec bohm T-Shirt In addition,I will do this parents didn’t step in & say enough was enough. Any hole higher than waist deep for the digger is dangerous, and a 5 foot hole is well above the head of a 5 year old girl. That would have been dangerous for me as a 5’3″ adult. Sand can collapse suddenly and it is very heavy, even when dry. Wet sand is like having a brick wall fall on top of you. And if you dig below the water line (which changes with the tide) it gets even wetter and becomes quicksand. It doesn’t even need to be that deep if you happen to be bending over when the wall shears and you can’t get back out. In construction we have very specific rules about depths and means of egress. I read the American professional baseball third baseman alec bohm T-Shirt In addition,I will do this entire article but I’m having a hard time conceptualizing what exactly happened here. When I think “bury-your-sibling-in-beach sand” I envision a shallow trench that one lays down in and gets covered over. I can’t quite grasp how two small children could dig a pit which, once it collapses, can’t be excavated by a group of several fully grown men digging frantically. sand is unstable so they either dig too deep and the sides cave in, or the try to dig a tunnel and it collapses. and its very heavy so when it collapses on you it pushes the air out of your lungs and you cant breathe. unles they get you out pretty much right away this can happen Happened to my friend years ago when we we were in 4th grade and he died as well. No one could get him out in time. Here is a good video showcasing how malleable sand is. They dug a narrow shallow trench and within a few hours it basically turns into a river
