The ad is already paid for, what they’re looking for at that point is clicks. The ads pop up and block things on purpose to generate interaction i.e. “damnit, I clicked the All I Need Is This Dog And That Other Dog Pug shirt But I will love this microscopic X in the corner but the ad still redirected me” Ad monetization has changed with more options, but 20 years ago advertisers would be charged (more) by the host site based on the click through rate. Hypothetically, if you wanted to raise awareness and have people buy your stuff at brick and mortar, you didn’t want clicks because you got discounted or free advertising. But if you wanted visitors to your site, the clicks were desirable. Tangentially, anyone remember the game ads where you literally played a(n easy) game and got to earn your prize? The more I see ads, the more I hate them. They were fine in the beginning as banners on the top or side of the page. But they quickly took over a page in a span of months. They don’t just cover the top and sides of the page but also are now found within the wall of text.

It’s even worse on Youtube. I get served 2 unskippable ads every 2 minutes in a 10 minute video and the All I Need Is This Dog And That Other Dog Pug shirt But I will love this video shows a sponsor. I don’t give a shit about sponsors or whatever they’re pitching. Firefox with ublock origin. I’ve been using it for years (even for youtube videos on my phone- I don’t use the YT app at all) and periodically forget that horrible ads even exist. One of my friends forgot to turn off screen sharing in discord recently and I got a glimpse of what the raw internet looks like nowadays. I almost did a spit take it was so appalling. I knew it would be bad and I was still shocked. I unfortunately know plenty of people that act this way. The ads continue to exist because they continue to get clicks.
