Even if you love your work it’s still work. I love what I do, but I don’t always want to go do the Alan Jackson Signature Vintage An American singer-songwriter T-Shirt and by the same token and job every day. The best job in the world still sucks half the time (Then a load of people were laid off, and I didn’t like it as much – but at least I now know what I’m looking for next). Did not win the lottery, but that’s what I did. Loved my job, perfect fit for my skillset, specialized knowledge and talents, mostly great coworkers — but the second my partner made enough money to support us both, I quit. We had the luxury of going to in-state schools and paying off our student loans a few years prior. I finished mine by working at a job I utterly hated and destroyed my soul before getting my dream job, so been on both ends. The “I want to be doing anything else” feeling persisted. Now I freelance for scraps and keep our house clean and zero dollars and I could not be happier.

I spent most of my engineering career working at jobs I did not like. I found my dream job at 49 and after I had been laid off from a job I detested: co-workers were backstabbers; out of the 3 managers I reported to, one was unsupportive and the second was clueless. That was 17 years ago and I am still in the same department, though now I am the senior member of the department and will be retiring next year.
