She also asked me whether I’d eaten already, then told me where to get the most delicious porchetta sandwich in the city, which I did after we parted ways. She was right. I was so glad that I had some Italian under my belt so we could have an real conversation. It felt like a magical encounter, and like I truly experienced the heart of the city. I think St Francis would have approved.

I can’t attach photos here, but you can google some photos of Sveti Stefan Queens beach I was driving down the road into Valdez, Alaska. I looked out my window to see a bald eagle flying right next to the car. He kept us company for about a mile, staying right above car top level, about 10 ft to the left of the car.

On my final cruise ship contract I got to see a total solar eclipse from the middle of the south pacific ocean. I had a couple beautiful experiences when I lived in Brasil in 1986. I got really fed up with São Paulo so I packed a backpack and traveled around the country. On a long train ride to nowhere, I sat next to a young girl who had no concept of me being from a faraway place (near Chicago). I had to estimate how many days it would take us traveling in that train in order to get to my house. When we stopped at a station, her mom bought some fruits and shared. I looked at this odd tropical fruit, and bit in to it. My first taste of a guava: OMG, sweet and so luscious, dribbling juice down my arm! A few weeks later I was in a town where I had the phone number of someone I had met briefly before. We met up for dinner, and a friend of hers was shocked that I, a young single woman, was staying alone in a crappy hotel. She took me home with her and her mom and brother spent the next two days sharing their apartment and their culture with me. They took me to museums and other places. They cooked me local food. They made a bossa nova mix tape for me! We cried when it was time for me to leave. Although we did not keep in touch, I will never forget their kindness and I have paid it back/forward many times since then. 💕

My family traveled to California for a cousin’s wedding during the presidential campaign season. One day, we didn’t have much planned, so we went looking around for things to do. Parked the rental under a hotel with a gift shop inside for souvenirs. Took a walk and found a textile museum and some other cool stuff to explore for a bit before going to said gift shop, buying souvenirs, and going back to the hotel for dinner. At the hotel, turned on the TV, which was set to a local news channel. The very parking area we had just left had been rioted and many of the cars damaged or destroyed by attendees of a local campaign rally.
I was on vacation in Oahu and decided to go snorkeling at Hanauma Bay. It was late afternoon and I was fully prepared to deal with crowds of people, but when we showed up, it was almost empty. I ended up getting to snorkel with a sea turtle by myself for 20-30 minutes. Just for reference, I kept my distance and allowed him to approach me. Me and my friends were dancing under the snow in Shinjuku! It’s very rare for it to snow in Tokyo. The weather was sunny and cloudless which made the water a magnificent blue. Our guide said it was only the second day all season with weather that good and it was August. There was a mama bear with her three cubs chilling at the beach. They were so used to visitors that they just sat there even though we were only about 50 feet away. We saw a dozen bears in total but the weather with the family of bears next to this beautiful lake surrounded by mountains was extremely special. I had a pretty great day today. Currently in La Fortuna, Costa Rica. This morning we walked around Mistico Hanging bridges which were interesting- the guide was wonderful, we saw monkeys, lizards, snakes and lots of birds and the weather was pleasant. Then we had lunch at a delicious soda (patacones!!), went and played in the free hot springs outside of town, got a massage and then went for pizza and a beer. Watching my daughters climb around in the river with steam rising from it, while it poured down rain was heavenly.
Being in Berlin in November 1989 when The Wall (border to East Germany) opened up. So it is the rainy season with fewer tourists and some things were cheaper. The lucky part came in when we took to the train to Aguas Calientes from Cusco. There were mudslides that cancelled multiple trains all week, but we were able to get a train to AC and back. We did have an hour or more delay as a mudslide was cleared on our return to Ollantaytambo, but we were able to see the ruins on our trip and if it had not been that day, we would not have been able to get there.
