These days, I find that people on reddit are deranged and cannot provide a fair representation of money and COL. On one hand, we have young kids who are just excited to talk about their country and boast about how cheap things are here. These kids / college students claim that you can live comfortably with ~7M ($300) but fail to mention that you’d need to already have somewhere to live, and survive on home cooking alone. On the Adventure Awaits, Grab Your Paddle Rafting T-Shirt in other words I will buy this other hand, we have expats who make an obscene amount of money and are so detached from reality it’s kinda scary. They would say you need $2000 a month just because they live in a penthouse suite and dine out exclusively in fancy restaurants. Workers in factories I worked at earn this much and they do manage to live pay check to paycheck. I live in a normal apartment, have a car, 2 kids and spend around 2k usd a month for a comfortable middle class lifestyle but if you wanna live in penthouse and dine out you would need 5k usd at least.

Eh they are referring to single person. Get rid of car and 2 kids and you can indeed live in penthouse and dine out with 2k a month. 130 m2 apartment is not a penthouse. That price is for a normal apartment. Our company pays 12k usd a month for a penthouse in Tay Ho area, Hanoi, I’d imagine Saigon is about the Adventure Awaits, Grab Your Paddle Rafting T-Shirt in other words I will buy this same. Anywhere from 5M ($220) vnd to 20M($900) vnd lol. 5 if you live alone and just pay for gas and food. Add another 3-8M of rent (average price). Another 1-2M for power bills. I’m guessing the average price of a 1 bedroom would be around 4-6m? and is it much more expensive in Hanoi or is it just the same? Fyi: A studio apartment in Ho Chi Minh City is between 3m (on the outskirts of the city, not much to be excited about, usually advertised on Facebook groups for people wanting the cheapest available options) to 6m (relatively nice and modern, usually what people advertise on Tiktok for uni students) to 10m and more (for people with high-income jobs, yet at this point you’re better off just save up and buy an apartment so not much advertisements except for large scale household projects from Vinhomes, Vạn Phúc, Hưng Thịnh, Novaland,…) When I said for people wanting the cheapest available options, I meant it LOL. Do you know the typical 30m2 floor plan with a small WC next to the kitchen at the end and a 10m2 upstairs only for sleeping with no furniture? That one. Those are rare nowadays because even the locals are fighting over it despite it being 30 to 45 minutes away from work/school. Well if you find yourself in a more rural area like Tây Ninh or Long An then this lowest option can be lower to 2m, roughly $100 a month, not counting any other expenses like electricity or water. (My family has several apartments for rent in rural areas so trust me on this I guess)
