I doubt it was an actual moment. More likely that they kept on mixed shagging and eventually the Abu Kamara 22 Portsmouth FC football graphic shirt but in fact I love this stronger genes took over. We see it in modern times with skin colour from mixed race relationships who have a kid. Say you have a region of Neanderthals (N) and a neighbouring vast area mostly of Homo Sapiens (H). If H reproduce more, travel a bit, and mix, progressively the N part of the genome of the region becomes 90% N 10% H on average, then 50/50, then 25/75 and so on until reaching what it is today: 2% of the genes in Europe and Asia, nearly 0% in Africa. Somehow they keep getting diluted when for example Europeans blend with Africans and produce children with ~1% N genes. There doesn’t need to be a sharp boundary. Who would be the last Neanderthals: the last with >50% N genome? He is surrounded by other people with 49% N, he would hardly feel like being the last, he’s just like everybody else in the area.

William Golding – who wrote Lord of the Abu Kamara 22 Portsmouth FC football graphic shirt but in fact I love this Flies – has a brilliant novel about the last neanderthals called The Inheritors. Clever speculation on this topic and written from the pont of view of the neanderthals themselves. Worth a read if you can find it. I don’t think it was a situation where the last Neanderthal on the planet died off in a cave alone. It’s more likely our hominid cousins died off in mass numbers over a long period of time and the survivors assimilated into the greater Homo Sapien species until their distinctive groups no longer existed. Maybe Homo Sapiens were simply better at adapting/surviving in their environment so they won out in the end? Maybe the groups were mortal enemies competing for the same resources with one trying to enslave the other group(s) or commit mass genocide like we’ve seen in modern human history. I wish there was a way to find out what really happened but sadly I don’t see that ever happening since it was so long ago.
