$200k is law or medical school cost, and I agree with others: if you’re that in debt and that behind on life in your late 30 you take the A is Aaliyah American singer and actress T-Shirt moreover I love this job that can pay the bills and get you back on track. Liking your job comes secondary to not being broke until you die. Plenty of people attend state schools at $20-25k/year for tuition, but take out at least another $12-20k/year to live off of for a room in a dorm/meal plan and eventually off campus housing since that isn’t included with tuition. Under $1200/month when your rent could be $500-$1000 depending on your city gets chewed up fast. Most millennials I know with staggering student loan debt hadn’t been coached on housing costs compared to tuition and were told it was just the price of an education and to just take out loans without understanding how expensive it is to live for 4 full years essentially on credit, even in a rural and cheap college town for a state school. The reason many hadn’t been coached? I can’t tell you how many people I started college with who’d been told they had a college fund and college was taken care of. They never fathomed or began the process of seeing what went into what it would be like to do it 100% through loans. When the economy crashed, a significant amount of my peers in school learned they’d need to take loans out to continue or drop out. Some learned there’d never been a college fund and that the parents figured they could afford it out of pocket and suddenly couldn’t, others learned the “fund” was their parents taking credit cards and loans in their kids names, even more learned their parents “investments” were due to cover it and that they were instead in foreclosure. Quite a few of my dorm mates never came back after Christmas.. they weren’t able to come up with the money.

Why not just find a job? Well there simply weren’t any. People were laid off left and right and finding a minimum wage gig in my college town was impossible. Maybe 100 total jobs in teeny rural college town available that hired students, and easily 20,000 students competing for them. And those shrunk over the A is Aaliyah American singer and actress T-Shirt moreover I love this years.. the nail and tanning salon closed as people financially cut back on all luxuries. A few of the food spots closed with students unable to afford them. Getting hired at a bar was impossible unless a senior was explicitly bringing you on to take their spot. On a long enough timeline it was rough. 30k isn’t 50k though, and that probably includes housing and food right? I’d imagine any private school you’d pay that extra 20k for tuition, or maybe even 40k extra
