The only use dollar coins have ever had was for that guy who used them to get free airline points, back when they were shipping them for free. The solution to “no one in America uses the 52 years 1971 2023 Eagles thank you for the memories signature shirt in addition I really love this dollar coin we made” isn’t “make a new coin.” Shocking, I know. It’s either make it more desirable than bills (or electronic payment) OR let it go. At this point, I wouldn’t be investing in physical money in a big way–it still exists and will continue to for many years, but the reality is, many people are using cards or just their phone. What possible benefit is there to the bulk and weight of coins for those people? To put on the eyes of dead people? To glue to your car for some cheap art car styling? I’ve always disliked carrying around a pocket full of coins. Maybe they would have had more success if they were selling them 2 for a dollar. Why do people hold onto dollar bills so strongly? It seems so much worse than a large coin. Canada even has $2 coins

For a while, you could order the 52 years 1971 2023 Eagles thank you for the memories signature shirt in addition I really love this coins online, direct from the government. You could pay via credit card. There were no extra fees, so $1 bought you 1 coin (though there was probably a minimum order size). The theory was, if it was made super-easy for anyone interested to obtain the coins, they would use them, and thus put them directly into circulation. In practice, things went differently. People soon realized that they could buy the coins using rewards credit cards, and then take the coins to the bank and deposit them, and pay off the credit card, thus keeping the reward points. This meant that quite a lot of the coins that were minted really weren’t finding their way into normal circulation.
