I probably would say something along the You’ve Woken The Hive Destiny shirt in contrast I will get this lines of “You look great, but Dress A isn’t proportioned as well as Dress B.” Also, speaking generally, I really wish more women felt they were required similar levels of tact. I was trying on clothes the other day and this couple was in the dressing room area. The guy wasn’t diced or anything, but relatively fit. As a person who has no body shame, I usually default to “omg I hate that dress on you” and if they ask why, I usually say, “it doesn’t make you look as hot as you are”. My mindset is based on clothing rather than the body. I usually ask my husband if a dress I chose makes me look fat and he usually says yes but in my mind it translates as, “the style doesn’t suit my body”. I did once say to friend I wanted to show up looking like a sausage at her wedding (thin strapped, tie up) because I like the style, but I don’t work out so I knew it wasn’t gonna sit on my body right.

You can always turn back and say “listen, I don’t think your fat, I think that style of dress doesn’t compliment you the You’ve Woken The Hive Destiny shirt in contrast I will get this way it should” and if she asks for more info, just respond with, “idk, it’s just not doing what the other dress is doing”. But back to the question, the correct response to is never to agree with “does it make me look fat?”. The correct response would be a positive spin on what you said in your comment (“…the dress wasn’t necessarily flattering…”), that is to say that dress B looked much nicer on her. Of course she could still take that badly (that she looked bad in dress A), but that’s on her. I always counter with “Are you looking for an honest compliment or an honest truth?” and then will answer accordingly. I have a different angle. Who here on Reddit is going to a ball. Next thing you know, you’ll be going to a gala. Gonna need another new dress for that I suppose.
