All in all, everything just seems a little off from how things were when I was in high school, but the You’re my person, grey’s quote heartbeat shirt but in fact I love this picture as a whole definitely screams “Target sales flyer” circa 1998. There was a little of this but mostly the mid-late 90s was dickies and button downs. Vans and quite a few cargos. With the loops. And mini backpacks for girls who needed something just big enough to be useless. I think the big part for me is nobody had dyed hair like that in the 90s. It was still natural colors and such. Yeah, I went back and looked… About the only accurate thing are the pants and the girl’s shoes. Maybe the black/red polo and the mini backpack. But those hair styles are off, and the other shirts are off, and given that “seafoam” was a running gag about horrible colours, I’m gonna say the girl’s colour scheme is off. I don’t think I saw anyone dressed like that in the 90s, at least not in the UK. It was early 00s when the goths and skaters started going hard with this look. Yah, I was going to say. Yah there were some people who dressed like this, but not nearly the majority. These are pretty classic raver kids As a teen in the 90s, almost no one dressed like this. These would’ve been the weird kids in school, not the cool kids.

Agreed. I went to an inner city school. Mostly black and there were a few of the You’re my person, grey’s quote heartbeat shirt but in fact I love this white kids that nobody ever talked to that dressed like this. These were trends. The overarching fashion choice is generally a simple t-shirt and jeans. Probably 70% of people don’t really skew towards trends. This is also when the Gap and old navy Abercrombie Hollister were popular. Everyone wearing unbuttoned shirts and khaki shorts. That’s why it’s in r/funny. Almost nobody dressed this way. There were definitely folks here and there that were some version of this, but most dressed pretty much like people do now. Grunge dress was also a thing, so lots of band shirts and bottoned flannel, at least in the NE where I grew up.
