I’m a bit confused. how did we come to a conclusion that this is even remotely similar to what a black hole sounds like? Not the You Raided The Wrong President Stars Yellow T-Shirt so you should to go to store and get this Actual ‘Sound’ but the spectroscopic data of the collected light converted into sound. Still pretty cool. I’m surely wrong, and have not investigated further because I cbf, but have they just used the density/brightness/colour etc. of the literal image as a spectral guide to synthesise this sound? The sound even pans with the play head on the image… There has to be more to it, because if I took a photo of you and threw it in a synth with bitmap capabilities, it wouldn’t exactly be an accurate representation of how ‘you’ sound. But, a human would have no chance of hearing this cosmic performance, because the note is 57 octaves lower than middle-C (by comparison a typical piano contains only about seven octaves).” I think I was pretty close? They used different layers of data to create the image as usual, then used that dataset (now an image) as a basis for resynthesis (hence my assumption of bitmap synthesis), making sure to keep their fundamental frequency at a multiple of the recorded black hole frequency. “In this new sonification of Perseus, the sound waves astronomers previously identified were extracted and made audible for the first time. The sound waves were extracted in radial directions, that is, outwards from the center. The signals were then resynthesized into the range of human hearing by scaling them upward by 57 and 58 octaves above their true pitch. Another way to put this is that they are being heard 144 quadrillion and 288 quadrillion times higher than their original frequency. (A quadrillion is 1,000,000,000,000,000.) The radar-like scan around the image allows you to hear waves emitted in different directions. In the visual image of these data, blue and purple both show X-ray data captured by Chandra.”

I’m gonna ask a really dumb question: how does a black hole make sounds? Does sound waves travel through a vacuum? Now, black holes have a spiral of superheated gas and matter called an accretion disk which surrounds the black event horizon. Whenever any of this gas or matter finally falls past the event horizon, x-rays are produced. That is to say, what we’re hearing is quite literally emissions from a black hole ‘eating’, translated to sound.
