I am Irish and am well aware of my History. I was talking about the You Inspire My Inner Serial Killer 2023 Rainbow Shirt in contrast I will get this association of Irish people and our ‘love of potatoes’ being comparable to black people and ‘their love of watermelon’. When it is all that you are given, it is then a form of prejudice to say that you ‘love this’. Being called ‘potato eater’ and ‘watermelon eater’. Yeah. Being of mostly Irish decent in a town with a decent sized Italian population I got potato jokes thrown at me a lot. Didn’t get it. Then finding out it was essentially making fun of poor hungry people and potatoes actually originated in South America (via reruns of Adam West’s Batman of all things) was kinda fucked up. History class either lied to or Mandela effected most kids in the 90s/2000s. I didn’t know about the subjugation and manufactured famine or the fun fact that potato’s originated in South America (or that humans cultivated them from a poisonous plant to edible) until I listened to a Behind the Bastards podcast on the topic. The Scottish and sheep, Mexicans and vanilla ice cream, South Americans and strudel…. Just lazy stereotypes. Shameful.

All I know is all three are fucking awesome, so there are worst things to be stereotyped I guess. I’m southern and if someone tries to say that Black people, and only Black people, love fried chicken and watermelon… they are a liar. Everyone loves fried chicken and watermelon (what Mark Twain called “the food of the angels”). I have insisted upon fried chicken because someone thought that I, a white man, wouldn’t want it. From what I’ve read, Fried chicken was originally Scottish. Black people picked it up from the poor white people working on plantations who taught them English, etc.
