He used to say it’s be grateful for him someday… I guess he was right about that too To buying them pads because they’re too shy, to seeing hair all over the restroom, mood swings when it’s their monthly cycle, and seeing bloody pads, paper, in the trash. My daughter is not naturally mine. I had her when I got with my now wife. I’ve been in her life longer than I haven’t she’s in her 20s now. But she is my daughter, I never refer to her as my step daughter (an important distinction in the home and in life. She needs to know she isn’t any less important than my natural sons) I’ve learned MANY things. Many of those through great difficulty. In no particular order: 1) I can’t communicate with her the same way as I do my boys. 2) They’re expensive. 3) it’s very difficult to learn how to navigate life being stunningly beautiful. It’s almost a curse. It’s like being very rich, and always having to wonder if people are around you just for your money, except with your physical attributes instead. Having to help her go though life on more than just her looks is something I never had to teach my boys. Not because they’re not gorgeous, but because it’s SO DIFFERENT for girls. It’s almost like she’s constantly a target just for being beautiful. And she doesn’t wear more makeup or wear anything more revealing than most other girls. In essence, it made me change the way I see women in general. It taught me to be more empathetic, to try to see things from their perspective which is completely different from us men.

Am a Mom, not Dad, but I totally understand this! I was blessed with a daughter who even as a baby/child/now adult, is objectively beautiful. I had to help her navigate this, even with the You Belong Among The Wildflowers Lovers T-Shirt Apart from…,I will love this genuinely positive compliments, from a very young age, as she couldn’t help hearing a running commentary on her appearance every time she left the house. How to accept a compliment graciously, or ignore, and give it all as little thought as possible. I told her she had to find a way to deal with it or resign herself to wear a bag over her head, which would be kinda weird and impractical, lol. I also resolved to tell her how smart she was much more often than mentioning any physical traits, and advised close family to try to emphasize the same. Her beauty was just winning the genetic lottery, but her brain has the capacity for changing the world! She is a very successful well-centered adult. My eldest son, also very beautiful and handsome, never had to deal with this kind of mind-fuckery. Their experience in the real world is very different indeed.
